Interior Health confirms first cases of monkeypox

Interior Health has recorded its first two cases of monkeypox, though the communities connected to the cases have not been identified.

The cases were confirmed as of Aug. 11. As of that date, there have been 98 cases of monkeypox in the province: 81 in Vancouver Coastal, nine in Fraser Health, six in Island Health and two in Interior Health. Most people with monkeypox in B.C. have mild symptoms and do not require any specific interventions, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Across Canada, there have been 1,059 cases recorded.

Interior Health said it is following federal and provincial guidance on the use of vaccine to protect those at highest risk of contracting monkeypox.

The vaccine is not recommended for the general public, Interior Health said, noting it is providing immunizations by appointment.
