Submitted – The Cortes Community Health Association was incorporated in 1993, with the long term goal of providing consistent medical coverage to the residents of Cortes Island. Operating as a not-for-profit organization, it is run by a volunteer board of directors made up of local community members. In 2005, after extensive fundraising, the Cortes community came together to open the Cortes Community health Centre, a medical Centre designed and built entirely through local efforts. The Health Centre building was designed to house a physician, laboratory, dispensing pharmacy, two examination rooms, and a treatment room for office procedures and emergency use. The Centre is also used on a regular basis by provincial mental health and public health services offered through the Vancouver Island Health Authority. With a brand new building, Cortes was able to attract a full time doctor, as well as two VIHA nurses. The centre is currently being operated by a Physicians group, 5 doctors who work together to ensure full time medical coverage is available to the community throughout the year. An additional 8 staff members provide support as MOAs, cleaning staff and administrators.
