Keenan Miller – The Blade
As early as 5 B.C., humans were working to understand and treat cataracts.
The earliest recorded form of cataract surgery was called “couching,” a technique wherein people would use a needle to dislodge a cataract from the visual field, improving a patient’s ability to see. But this early solution would often damage the eye and only temporarily restore sight.
Surgical techniques have improved dramatically in the centuries since. Still, cataracts are currently the world’s leading cause of blindness.
